Yeast infection can occur in patients who frequently take antibiotics or who are taking birth control pills. It can also occur in patients who have diabetes or a chronic infection. Symptoms range from aching, fatigue, chest pain, joint pain to diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain.
Yeast infection is caused by over growth of candida (monilia) in the gastrointestinal tract. Since everybody has been exposed to candida during their lifetime, a blood test to detect antibody levels to candida are not reliable and should not be used to diagnose yeast infection.
In order to make a diagnosis of yeast infection, patients have to show improvement of their symptoms while being on a low carbohydrate diet or antifungal medications. Because of the complexity of yeast infection, you should call today to be seen at our office.
